Everything you need to know about the Senate elections

##### Senate elections will take place on Sunday, 27 September 2026 in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône. The department must elect eight senators.

The election

Senators are elected by indirect universal suffrage, for a term of 6 years.

In Bouches-du-Rhône, they are elected by list ballot under proportional representation.

Each renewal elects approximately half of the senators, distributed into two series (depending on the departments).

Series 2 (to which the department of Bouches-du-Rhône belongs), comprising 178 seats, will be renewed on 27 September. The 170 seats of Series 1 were renewed in September 2023.

Who are the "great electors"?

The electors are: outgoing deputies and senators; regional and departmental councilors, and especially mayors and municipal council delegates, who alone account for 95% of the electors.

For the 2026 election, Series 2 involves 93,469 electors, including 88,937 municipal council delegates (95.2%). In Bouches-du-Rhône, there are 3,695 electors, of whom 3,566 are municipal council delegates.

What is a senator?

Senators have legislative power just like deputies: they vote on laws and oversee the Government. They represent territorial collectivities in metropolitan France and overseas, and examine bills—before the National Assembly—whose main purpose concerns the organization of territorial collectivities.

In terms of oversight, senators have the same powers as deputies, but cannot hold the government accountable through a vote of no confidence.

In the event of disagreement between the two assemblies, the final decision rests with the National Assembly, except for certain specific laws that require the Senate's agreement, such as constitutional laws and organic laws directly concerning the Senate.

Today, 35% of senators are women and the youngest senator was elected at the age of 26.

Who can be elected senator?

To be elected senator, the following conditions must be met:

• be at least 24 years old (the eligibility age was changed by the law of 14 April 2011. Previously, the minimum age was 30);
• hold the status of elector, meaning possessing French nationality and enjoying full civil rights;
• not be in a case of incapacity or ineligibility as provided by law.
